MAYOR'S
2008 STATE OF THE CITY ADDRESS
The Chamber is hosting the annual Mayor's State of the City Address
on October 15. This year's address will be Mayor Cam Jackson's
second. The Mayor's first two years in municipal office have seen
many high profile issues on the city agenda, only a few of which
include McMaster University, Burlington's Performing Arts Centre and
Wal-Mart. This address is often viewed as the Mayor's most
important speech of the year. We are very pleased to be holding the
State of the City Address at the newly rebuilt clubhouse at the
Burlington Golf and Country Club.

CHAMBER'S
SCHOLARSHIP FUND REACHES $100,000 GOAL
In
May of 2005, the Chamber announced that it had partnered with the Burlington
Community Foundation to establish an endowment fund to ensure
the growth and sustainability of the Chamber's
scholarship program. The Chamber set an aggressive target of
$100,000 for the fund. To help encourage donations to reach this target,
Chamber President Keith Hoey promised to shave his head if the
target was reached by December 31, 2007. On December 4, at the
Chamber's Business
After 5 networking event, Board Chair Rosalene Phillips announced
that the fund had reached the $100,000 target. Phillips shaved
Hoey's head to the amusement of the 200 plus crowd. Read

CHAMBER
DRIVES MAJOR
WIN FOR BUSINESSES
On
March 21 federal parliament voted against Bill C-257 (which proposed
anti-replacement worker legislation). This is a major win for businesses
in Canada and an excellent example of how being a member of the Chamber
of Commerce can help your business. When plans for this new bill were
announced, the Canadian Chamber mobilized local Chambers throughout the
country. The
Burlington Chamber contacted local MP Mike Wallace and solicited his
support in defeating this Bill. This type of advocacy work is only
possible because of the strength of each local Chamber and the channeling
of that strength to the federal level. Your membership makes a
difference.
