the Canadian Chamber

Competition

The Burlington Chamber of Commerce brought home the gold from the Canadian Chamber of Commerce convention held in Saskatoon from September 16 to 18.  Each year the Canadian Chamber holds a competition to recognize and promote the excellence and achievements of local Chambers that are part of the national Chamber network.  This year’s theme was “Best Communications Project”.  The Burlington Chamber was awarded the gold medal for its Integrated Communications Plan which uses a variety of vehicles to communicate with Chamber members and the public.

The Burlington Chamber focused its award submission on the Chamber’s website, weekly eNews and other communication vehicles and how they are integrated to provide Chamber members and the business community with easily accessible and up-to-date information about the Chamber, local business and the community.  The submission outlined the strategies and tactics that are used to ensure consistent and current information is available to Chamber members.  The submission also described each of the communication vehicles used by the Chamber.  However, the real key of the Integrated Communications Plan is how those vehicles are integrated.  Through the communications plan the Burlington Chamber has seen record growth in membership, event attendance and financial sustainability.

The Burlington Chamber faced very stiff competition from other finalists, the Battlefords Chamber of Commerce and the Greater Charlottetown Area Chamber of Commerce.  The Battlefords submission, Aboriginal Employment Development, is a toolkit designed to address the needs of Aboriginal youth who want to be actively engaged in the workforce.  The Greater Charlottetown submission was a Get Connected Campaign, a month long membership drive.  Both of these projects yielded significant results for their Chamber.

The submissions were rated by a panel of judges based on the following criteria: innovative nature of the project, measurable results, project transferability and the judges' personal impressions of the project.
