Business Scholarship

The students of today are the business leaders of tomorrow.  It is vital to the success of Burlington's business community that our school system helps give students some of the skills they will need to succeed in the business community.

To promote the importance of entrepreneurial thinking and to recognize achievements in business-related studies, each year the Chamber of Commerce gives a scholarship to a graduating student in each of Burlington's high schools.  To qualify for the scholarship, the student must:

  •   have a background in business studies, stressing free enterprise
  •   demonstrate an application of business principles
  •   demonstrate problem solving, management and leadership skills
  •   be a graduating student

The decision of which student will receive the scholarship at each school is made by the faculty and administration at each high school.

ENDOWMENT FUND

In May of 2005, the Chamber announced that it had partnered with the Burlington Community Foundation to establish an endowment fund to ensure the growth and sustainability of the Chamber's scholarship program.  Establishing the fund took considerable startup monies and this was only possible due to the generosity of several individuals and organizations.  The Chamber is very pleased and proud to recognize a number of our very generous supporters and initial contributors to our endowment fund.

BUSINESS STUDENT SCHOLARSHIP ENDOWMENT FUND DONATIONS

In May of 2005, the Chamber announced that it had partnered with the Burlington Community Foundation to establish an endowment fund to ensure the growth and sustainability of the Chamber's Business Student Scholarship program.  Establishing the fund took considerable start-up monies and this was only possible due to the generosity of several individuals and organizations (Founders Club members).  The Chamber set an aggressive target of $100,000 for the fund.  To help encourage donations to reach this target, Chamber President Keith Hoey promised to shave his head if the target was reached by December 31, 2007.

bald anim 300On December 4, at the Chamber's Business After 5 event, Chamber Board Chair Rosalene Phillips announced that the fund had reached the $100,000 target.  "We're pleased that the business community has rallied around this cause and recognized that today's students are tomorrow's business leaders," said Phillips.  "Getting the fund to $100,000 will ensure that the scholarships awarded to the students are meaningful and sustainable."  After announcing that the target had been reached, Phillips shaved Hoey's head to the amusement of the 200 plus crowd.  Click here to watch the video on YouTube.
